I recently started working on a project to analyze the colour products market in Sri Lanka. The main objective was to understand why a well-known Japanese quality colour product brand is not moving well in the Sri Lankan market, even though the business had already started.
The brand had initial market entry activities and some business operations were ongoing. However, due to the lack of a clear marketing direction and stopped Facebook promotional activities, the brand struggled to achieve market penetration and growth. Therefore, the project focused on identifying the real reasons behind this situation.
Personally, I have been familiar with colour products since my school days. As someone who enjoys art and drawing, I already had practical exposure to the types of colour products students used 4–5 years ago, how we purchased them, and how brands reached us. This personal experience helped me understand the market from a consumer perspective as well.
At the beginning of the project, the client shared their existing knowledge, brand details, and business background. Based on this information, we defined the project scope together with guidance from an experienced marketing professional (name not disclosed at this stage).
The project was divided into two main parts:
- General Background Analysis
- Market Survey
The background analysis was conducted first to gain a broad understanding of the current Sri Lankan colour products market and to collect insights needed to design the survey questionnaire.
During this stage, several key market players were identified. Established stationery giants such as Atlas were studied due to their strong presence in the school segment. In addition, successful local entrepreneurial brands like Pentium were also analyzed to understand how local brands have grown and captured market share.
This initial analysis helped create a clearer picture of market positioning, consumer behavior, pricing expectations, and distribution realities before moving into the survey phase.
